Southampton’s return to the English Premier League has come to an end as the club was officially relegated to the Championship following a 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
Southampton set an unwanted record as the earliest team to be relegated in Premier League history, with seven matches still remaining in the 2024-25 season.
Southampton, who earned promotion back to the Premier League last summer via the Championship playoff final, have struggled throughout the campaign.
The team won only two league matches this season, with their last victory coming on February 1 against Ipswich Town.
The Saints have conceded 74 goals—an average of nearly 2.4 per game.
The relegation marks Southampton’s second drop from the Premier League in three seasons, having also been relegated in 2022-23. Historically, the club had only been relegated twice in the top flight between 1966 and 2022.
Southampton now face the task of regrouping in the Championship next season. Attention will soon turn to Juric’s future.
Reports suggest that the Saints may explore managerial options, including Sheffield Wednesday’s Danny Röhl, as they aim to bounce back to the top flight.
