Thousands of Ugandans defied a heavy morning downpour to participate in the Kabaka Birthday Run, held today in Kampala to celebrate the 70th birthday of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, the revered King of Buganda.
The event, which took place at Lubiri Palace under the theme “Men for Good Health to Save the Girl Child,” showcased an extraordinary display of loyalty and resilience as participants braved the rain to honor their monarch and support the ongoing fight against HIV/AIDS.
The run was flagged off by the Kabaka himself despite the soggy conditions.
The run was estimated to involve 120,000 runners, walkers, and cyclists flood the streets, surpassing last year’s turnout of 110,000.

Despite the downpour, the event ran smoothly, with water stations and medical camps lining the routes. Participants paused at times to revel in the rain, turning a challenging morning into a joyous celebration.
“We’re here for the Kabaka and for our health, rain or shine,” one of the runners said.
As the wet but jubilant crowd dispersed, the Kabaka Birthday Run stood tall as Africa’s most populous run, a testament to the kingdom’s ability to mobilize its people.
