The former Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Support at Makerere University Frank Kitumba is recovering from severe injuries after a violent assault by a group of thugs at his residence on the university campus.
The attack allegedly occurred in the wee hours of Tuesday night and it has raised serious concerns about security within the institution.
It is said that a veichle forced its way into Kitumba's home just opposite the College of Computing and Information Sciences around midnight.
The attackers who were said to be unmasked, stormed the house, beat Kitumba and threatened his family against raising an alarm.
“They dragged me, beat me with blunt objects, and left me with head injuries,” he said.
Kitumba, who served as ICT Director for seven years until April 2018, alleges the attack was planned on orders from above though he did not specify who might be behind it.
His claims come amid a long-standing dispute with Makerere University over unpaid National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contributions, salary arrears, and gratuity, which he estimates exceed Shs200 million with interest.
In October 2024, he appealed to the Inspector General of Police for protection after receiving eviction threats from university management and Makerere police, a battle rooted in his refusal to vacate the campus residence until compensated.
An eye witnesses noted that a police patrol passed by during the attack but failed to intervene.
The attack has left unanswered questions how a truck could enter the heavily guarded premises unchallenged at such an hour.
