The Ugandan government has moved to dispel growing rumors over the potential banning of social media platforms, particularly TikTok while also announcing ongoing discussions to restore access to Facebook, which has been blocked in the country since 2021. The statement, made on April 2, 2025, comes after Mufti of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Ramadhan Mubajje, during Idd Prayers on Sunday advised the Government of Uganda to ban TikTok,
According to Mufti Mubajje, TikTok poses a significant threat to the country’s moral fabric and social harmony and he believes has gone beyond in promoting what he described as “abusive and harmful content.”
During a press briefing at the Uganda Media Centre, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, addressed remarks made by the Mufti of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council, Ramadhan Mubajje, who suggested during Idd prayers on March 30, 2025, that TikTok should be banned due to concerns over inappropriate content.

“The government has no plans to ban TikTok or any other social media platforms at this time,” Baryomunsi clarified. “We are instead focused on engaging with these platforms to regulate content and ensure responsible use that aligns with our cultural and legal standards.”
He added that the Government is in talks to reopen Facebook which has been blocked since 2021.
