This week, we are thrilled to celebrate Shakirah Namwanje as our Woman Crush Wednesday. A former student of Industrial and Organizational Psychology at Makerere University and the former Chief Editor of The Makererean. Shakirah's journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and passion.

Although Shakirah initially dreamed of pursuing journalism or law, life led her to the media world, where she found her true calling.

"I thank God that I ended up as Chief Editor; I believe this is my true calling in the journalism field," she said.

As Chief Editor of The Makererean, the Guild-run newspaper, Shakirah worked tirelessly to restore the publication’s popularity. She was determined to give the students of Makerere a newspaper that truly represents them, stating, "It’s their newspaper, not mine."

Her road to becoming Chief Editor wasn't without challenges. After losing her bid for the Guild Representative Council (GRC), Shakirah didn’t give up on her goal of contributing to the Guild. She continued to strive for leadership and ultimately secured the Chief Editor position unopposed, a success she attributes to the support and encouragement of her friends.

"I was told we would be three candidates, but on voting day, I was unopposed. It was an easy race for me," she said.

A significant source of inspiration for Shakirah comes from her friends, many of whom were involved in politics. Their support fueled her determination as she steered The Makererean, editing and managing the content with dedication.

Today, we celebrate Shakirah Namwanje for her resilience, hard work, and unwavering commitment to making a difference. Her story reminds us that success often comes from unexpected paths, and with determination, one can achieve great things.
